The engineering phase can cover many different disciplines of “engineering”. Platform provides electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and design engineering services, of which usually at least one form is needed to transition an idea into something that can be manufactured. Since the engineering phase tends to cover a variety of expertise, this is usually the biggest portion of a product design project. This is the point at which design artwork/direction is turned into a dimensionally accurate 3D CAD model and developed in a way that produces manufacturable components. This 3D model is primarily used to develop the mechanical and manufacturing engineering details, but also aids in creating photorealistic renderings for show and tell and other product marketing efforts. Manufacturing drawings are created from the model and used to build the first physical prototypes of the new product. Often times this phase is repeated after the alpha prototype is made to make small changes, dial in the mechanics, fit, and finish before heading to production.
